Modular Gift Packaging Set for „Skalický trdelník and Skalický Rubín"
Company:
GRAFOBAL, akciova spolocnost
Country: Czech Republic and Slovakia
Category: Gift Packaging
Created for the 120th anniversary of Grafobal, this gift packaging unites two Slovak PDO icons—Skalický trdelník and Skalický Rubín—in one coherent system. The challenge was to deliver a premium, region-rooted experience while coping with radically different product geometries: a handcrafted pastry with variable dimensions and a portfolio of wine bottles differing in height and base diameter. The result is a modular, mono-material paperboard solution that looks identical on the outside for brand unity, yet adapts intelligently inside for flawless product protection, presentation, and consumer delight.
The outer construction is shared across both SKUs to streamline tooling, reduce complexity, and reinforce recognition. Natural kraft board with a single-colour vine illustration communicates provenance with restraint; a clean emboss on the front panel elevates the names and creates tactile premium cues without resorting to multilayer finishes. The side artwork aligns perfectly upon closure, an exacting detail that signals craftsmanship and quality on shelf and in gifting contexts.
Inside, product-specific inserts manage performance. For wine, a two-point fixation secures the bottle at the base and neck. The base insert features a perforated collar that flexes to multiple diameters, maintaining stability without added components. The neck insert has dual apertures on opposing faces; a simple 180° rotation adapts to bottle height, ensuring precise axial restraint during transport and handling. For the trdelník, a shaped cradle tolerates the natural variability of a handmade product, preventing abrasion and crush while preserving the artisanal look and aroma upon opening.
Unboxing transforms into theatre. After opening, the lid folds neatly underneath the pack to create a tilted presentation platform. This intuitive, tool-free move turns the package into a display stand for tastings, gifting moments, or hospitality settings—from pack to podium in seconds. The inclined plane increases visibility, enhances perceived value, and facilitates serving without repacking or additional props.
The solution advances sustainability and circularity through design discipline. A mono-material paperboard body with minimal ink coverage simplifies recycling in mainstream paper streams; there are no plastic parts, foams, or magnets. Shared die-lines for the outers decrease the number of cutting tools, shorten make-readies, and help reduce waste. Lightweighting is achieved via geometry and precise creasing rather than heavier substrates. The restrained one-colour print lowers ink consumption and energy demand while achieving high visual impact. Where multilingual communication is needed, a QR code links to the English layer, avoiding redundant copy on pack and keeping the material footprint lean.
For retailers and brand owners, the design delivers operational efficiency with right-sized protection, fewer SKUs to manage, and a consistent premium look across categories. For consumers, it offers authentic storytelling, tactile quality, and an effortless presentation ritual that enhances the moment of sharing. In short, the Skalica Gift Set is a holistic packaging experience—modular, adaptive, and circular by intent—that honours local heritage while applying contemporary best practice in pack engineering, brand blocking, and end-of-life simplicity.
