Simple in design and delivering on-shelf premiumization, JBS' heritage Swift brand of Lamb Cutlets leverages packaging that signals simplicity, sustainability, product quality and safety, and brand trust, addressing key needs of the competitive fresh protein market, and eco-friendly shoppers. It not only delights consumers delivering fresh, quality Australian lamb, the recyclable* CRYOVAC brand Darfresh Mono-PET rollstock pack helps food-chain stakeholders meet their sustainability goals. Challenges including food and packaging waste are addressed by extending shelf life and freshness up to 18 days, and through material choices that can be recycled via household kerbside collection programs or soft plastics return to store collection programs. Compared to Modified Atmosphere Packaging formats used for fresh lamb, CRYOVAC Darfresh vacuum skin packaging advances shelf life from 12 days up to 18 days, eliminating thousands of absorbent pads from landfill. This innovation demonstrates how holistic, efficient packaging design can drive better environmental and economic outcomes.
Darfresh Mono-PET rollstock incorporates key ANZ Sustainable Packaging Design criteria and delivered the following : The entire Darfresh Mono-PET pack is recyclable, resulting in more than 60,000 kg of Mono-PET bottom web now able to be recycled through kerbside collection recycling programs and the lid film is recyclable through soft plastics return to store collection programs. This packaging solution replaces a heavier gauge non-recyclable PET/PE format, resulting in a packaging reduction of 5,000kg per annum. Unlike Modified Atmosphere packaging which requires headspace, the tray is right sized for the profile of the meat cut. By eliminating headspace the right sized pack delivers enhanced packing efficiencies, which benefit downstream processes efficiencies for transportation/logistics and better shelf utilisation at retail. For consumers, the easy open tear tab allows for greater accessibility and knife free access to the product, while the convenient freezer ready format facilitates less food waste in households and

CRYOVAC Darfresh MONO-PET is designed to protect against food waste and does so through efficient material design. Comprising virgin mono-PET, raw materials must meet regulatory food contact compliance – and the same applies whether using renewable or recycled content. The incorporation of recycled content in both top and bottom webs shapes this future product re-design – while ensuring no compromise to performance or value delivered across the food supply chain.
Be it young chefs in the making or our aging population, consumers young and old get to enjoy Swift Lamb Cutlets. Thanks to its easy open pull tab, this tamper evident pack requires no knives or scissors to access the product. The freezer-ready vacuum skin format offers a convenient solution that facilitates less food waste in households and greater mealtime flexibility. As a food company committed to feeding larger needs, JBS knows that sustenance doesn’t stop at the plate. Our planet, our people, and our communities feed us in a variety of ways. That's why JBS is working to reduce agriculture's impact on the planet, while allowing our food system to grow. While there’s lots of sustainable outcomes being delivered behind the scenes, sustainable packaging acts as an immediate proof point that consumers can see. Partnerships that enable sustainable outcomes are critical to shaping our sustainable food value chain.
Switching from its original non-recyclable 380um PET/PE rigid tray to the recyclable CRYOVAC 350um mono-PET rigid tray, has resulted a packaging reduction of 5,000 kg per annum and provides the ability to meet the ANZ 2025 National Packaging Targets. A further review identified the opportunity to reconfigure the packaging layout, enabling a reduction in packaging scrap (unavoidable roll edge trim) by 18% (more than 15 tonnes).
While comprising virgin resin, as shown in Image File "CO2.jpg", Darfresh mono-PET formats enable a CO2 reduction (including CO2 impact of food waste) over MAP, PVC and PET/PE formats.
Vacuum skin packaging requires a reduced pack profile (height), enabling enhanced space utilisation. The benefits of being able to pack, store and deliver more per unit space has flow on effects across warehousing (space is costly), distribution (carbon footprint impact) and on-shelf merchandising (more packs per shelf and better instore efficiencies).
This fully recyclable pack ensures 60,000 kg of mono-PET can be recycled through Australia’s kerbside collection programs and all lidding material is ARL recyclable through soft plastics return to store collection programs (note the soft plastic collection system is currently on pause but will be reactivated. This material is recyclable, approved and accepted through the soft plastics return to store program and meets the thresholds for the ANZ region for recyclability).
