Nefab WoodFoam Solution, which is developed by Nefab Packaging, can be an environmentally friendly substitute for polyurethane foam, which is otherwise harmful to both health and the environment. This is a very promising concept that is currently under development.
Together with our partner IBM, we succeeded in replacing all the polyurethane packaging materials used at their site in Hungary with Nefab WoodFoam Solution in order to protect the environment.
IBM has officially tested the change, their Power Circuit Boards are placed in a shielding bag between the Nefab WoodFoam solutions, which fully protects them from possible damage.
With this step, IBM Hungary has successfully fulfilled the company's environmental protection objectives to replace polyurethane.
Our future vision is to replace PU with sustainable solutions in as many projects as possible in order to reduce our own and our partner's CO2 emissions.

Nefab Packaging is currently working on the development of the Nefab WoodFoam Solution. It’s a fiber-based and recyclable cushioning development which can be a sustainable alternative to PU foam. It offers good shock absorption for light weight products. It can be customized to fit different product shapes and dimensions. To examine the environmental effects of the change in IBM, we used our life cycle analysis program, GreenCalc, which compared polyurethane and Nefab WoodFoam Solution.
With Nefab WoodFoam Solution we could reduce the CO2 emission by 44% (8 metric tons) per year and the generated waste by 222 kg (compare to the previous PU solution of our customer).
It is 100% isocyanate-free, which contributes to health & safety, and it reduces plastic consumption. It is recyclable in the paper stream; the world’s largest recycling stream and the fiber used are FSC certified.
