Woolworths, Australia’s largest grocery retailer, have undertaken a major packaging project for their bakery products. Through collaboration with store operations and several packaging suppliers, Woolworths successfully replaced their previously black non-recyclable plastic trays with a renewable pulp/plant-based fibre sourced from unbleached bamboo (40%) and unbleached sugarcane (60%).
This national change over into all 995 stores for over 50 in store bakery products represents 75% of all products that were previously packed in the black plastic non-recyclable tray. This reduced over 500 tonnes of plastic annually from their bakery department, and has improved the recyclability of the packaging.

Parkside collaborated with Two Farmers to create a compostable pack for its range of crisps – the first of its kind in the world. The compostable laminates break down within 12 weeks in industrial facilities and 26 weeks in home facilities, meeting TÜV OK Compost Home certification standards.
The bio-based materials used in the Two Farmers pack were all produced from sustainable sources, such as eucalyptus trees to create a paper, cellulose and biopolymer laminate. The solution is designed to provide improved oxygen and moisture barrier performance, delivering protection and preservation of the crisps, therefore minimising waste.

This “Shelf Ready Packaging (SRP)” cardboard box enables easy opening action to reduce work time for store staff and the large display window provides high visibility in stores. In general, boxes with zippers have lower strength, but the vertical zippers on this product suppress strength degradation during transportation.
We performed a compression test and found that the strength was about 10% better compared to a box with a horizontal zipper on the side. We received feedback from retailers that at the opening time of packages was reduced by up to 50%.

We have succeeded in developing a top sealed package for “tsukudani”, a traditional Japanese food cooked with soy-sauce, adding a resealing function for the convenience of our customers. We have also developed applicable  rigid container and its packaging machine to maximize the resealing properties of the film.

This rigid container can also be resealed approximately five times by crimping with fingers after opening, therefore this package can prevent food from drying and maintain their quality without using wrap to reduce waste.

Punchbowl Packaging’s approach was to deliver a simple, practical and sustainable solution for consumers. Our punnet base is made from renewable sugar cane, and the film from cellulose, both break down in home composts. Consumer feedback indicated that they highly valued both the compostability and the reduced plastic content.
This format, designed for fully automated production processes, achieved 10% weight reduction compared to traditional plastic punnets, 95% plastic reduction, and fits within existing retail outers. The punnet is made from renewable sources, is home compostable, and is also recyclable. Kaituna also developed reuse opportunities as seedling plant pots.
