György Viszkei – using his knowledge and practical experience – participated in different ways in transmitting knowledge of packaging and related identification (barcode) as well as waste recovery.
He used to teach at university level packaging and identification skills as associate lecturer at University of Miskolc and Obuda University. In the issue of waste recovery he was an unmissable lecturer of national and foreign conferences.
Among his professional educational works he used to carry out literature activity. As a co-author, lector he used to participate in writing gap-filling Hungarian textbooks - not limited to: Plastic packagings, Construction of food packaging, Industrial, commercial application of barcode technology. Dozens of professional articles testify his awareness-raising work.
As the president of the Hungarian Standardisation Organisation Barcode Committee, he managed the establishing and adaptation of standards regarding identification.
György Viszkei put emphasis on education and system approach. György Viszkei during his close to five-decade career created everlasting achievements in three areas.
At the start of his career - thanks to his development engineer work - he naturalised the producing of laminated and coextruded packagings. He worked out the fitting the barrier parameters of packaging materials to product details by engineering approach. Also attributed to him the introduction and dissemination of photopolymer printing cliché used in the flexo printing technology.
He recognised the importance of barcodes right away – in those days novelty at international level too – and he have the both politically and economically closed Hungary joined the EAN Organisation. As the leader of the Hungarian EAN Office he arranged great professional staff for the introduction of barcode technology in our country. He gained the support of the government to overcome all technical, technological obstacles. in Central and Eastern Europe among the first ones he accomplished the modern identification systems by his academic work and awareness-raising presentations.
Hungary had not been a member of European Union when he - as the founding secretary of CSAOSZ - recognised the importance of EPR system (packaging waste collection and recovery) which was a novelty in Europe. He shortly started the introduction of extended producer responsibility in Hungary in a complex way. During the time of joining the EU the harmonisation of Hungarian and European environmental regulation happened with his assistance. Later he established the first Hungarian EPR organisation - called ÖKO-Pannon Nonprofit PLC - with producers particularly interested in packaging. Under his leadership our country very quickly, before 2012 fulfilled the EU recycling targets.
His faith in EPR system was confirmed by the European Commission Waste Directive and the Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive modified in 2018, as regulation of generally applicable system. György Viszkei’s high-level professional work was respected by the Hungarian Government. First, he received an invitation to the Advisory Body of the government (National Environment Council), afterwards he was honoured a State Prize for his efficient work.
As the General Secretary of CSAOSZ in the 1990’s he based the long-term partnership with World Packaging Organisation. At present he is the co-president of CSAOSZ.
He performs functions in several professional organisations, at GS1 Hungary (former EAN which developed global organisation), at first he became Board Member, later Chairman of the Board.
On an international stage he represents Hungary in EAN, later GS1’s management body, as also in PRO Europe (Green Punkt – Packaging Recovery Organisation Europe) and EXPRA (Extended Producer Responsibility Alliance). In 1990 as the founding general secretary of CSAOSZ he established a small, but efficient organisation performing high-level interest representative work. The Assembly has gained the approval of the Hungarian Government and other authorities by 2020, the organisation is often asked for its help.
With his faith and forceful personality, he had the professional and financial support of 14 company leaders and established the first EPR organisation in Hungary, working effectively up to this day.
As the leader of EAN/GS1 national organisation he made GS1 Hungary for its innovative developments of international importance one of the noted members of global network. Gyorgy Viszkei is not only an excellent professional expert but he is a successful manager too. He operated the CSAOSZ as founder Secretery General, the ÖKO-Pannon Nonprofit PLC as founder Managing Director and GS1 Hungary Nonprofit PLC as Chairman of the Board successfully from not only professional but financial aspects too. György Viszkei created such successful organisations that these still operate successfully and in a respected way. He has been the president of HUNGAROPACK Hungarian Packaging Contest’s jury - national competition of WPO WorldStar program - for a long time.
He became a professional-financial supporter of the invitation of WPO to Budapest in 2016.
His confession of faith is: „Which is unavoidable – you have to take the lead”.
This statement of belief has been fulfilled efficiently by international standards in order to the integration of Hungarian packaging industry into the European Union.
